The Effect of Syringe Material in Arterial Blood Gas Analysis

Abstract
A comparative analysis was made of 25 arterial blood gas samples utilizing plastic and glass syringes analyzed at various intervals to determine the acceptability of using plastic syringes.
The results were as follows:
1) With time, Pco2 of arterial blood were clinically increased, and pH1, Po3, and base excess of arterial blood were clinically decreased until 60 minutes when arterial blood samples were stored at 0¡ÆC.
2) Studied arterial blood gases in glass and plastic syringes were not statically significant change until 60 minutes and so, we conclude that it is not problem to delay arterial blood analysis until 60 minutes when collected arterial blood samples are stored at 0¡ÆC,
3) There were no significant differences between arterial blood gas values in glass syringes and plastic syringes and so, we conclude that plastic syringe as well as glass syringe can be used satisfactorily for handling arterial blood samples.
